What events or groups did Malcolm X do/ participate in that helped the civil rights cause?
Malcolm X was mainly associated with three groups; The Black Panthers, Nation of Islam and Organization of Afro-American Unity

Nation Of Islam:
Malcolm Little joined the Nation of Islam during his time in prison. When released in 1952 on parole Malcolm Little changed his name to "Malcolm X". In 1953, just a little more than a year following Malcolm's release from prison he was named minister at the Nation of Islam's "Boston mosque, Temple No. 11." Around year later the NOI also made him minister at "Temple No. 12 (Philadelphia) and Temple No. 7 (New York)." Throughout the following years Malcolm helped the NOI be one of the most influential, yet controversial groups of the Civil Rights Movement. Malcolm decided to split with the NOI in March "64 as he felt that the NOI wasn't pushing enough for the civil rights of African American's and subsequently form his own Civil Rights Group.
Organization of Afro-American Unity:
The Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU) was founded by Malcolm X, John Henrik Clarke, and other black nationalist leaders on June 24, 1964. The OAAU was created soon after Malcolm's split with the Nation of Islam (NOI). The OAAU was made to "encompass all peoples of African origin in the Western hemisphere". Malcolm X had also made it his duty as a leader of the OAAU to be a unified courageous political voice for the Black Masses.
