The Black Panthers
Why did Malcolm X have such a large influence on the Black Panthers group and
what was the group about?
The Black Panthers were a revolutionary group who practiced self defence and they challenged to establish an insurgency of socialism through mass based programs.Malcolm clearly had a great influence on the ideologies and the Black Panther's philosophies. Bobby Seale, the founder of the Black Panthers, stated that Malcolm X was "a better speaker than even Martin Luther King." Seale also went on to name his son “Malik” also meaning Malcolm.
The Black Panthers were very interested in the way Malcolm X took his pro-violent stance extremely seriously, this attracted the Black Panthers because they agreed with his idea of if you are being attacked or pressured you have a right to fight back and protect yourself and your people. Malcolm's profound and inspiring speeches was another aspect that the Black Panthers found admirable about Malcolm was his, charisma and confidence to speak his mind in front of his peers and fellow people was outstanding. Malcolm believed in the unity of African American's which is another core belief shared by the Black Panther and all of these things made the party use extremely similar beliefs and ideas to Malcolm X.
Like Malcolm X, The Black Panther Organisation also agreed with the 'armed self defence' ideology that Malcolm had. Malcolm X’s influence on the philosophy of the Black Panther Party not only stayed within the boundaries of 'armed self defence'. One of Malcolm's speeches "The Ballot or the Bullet" was also highly recognised in the Black Panther community and became a slogan used by them into the future.
The Black Panthers took on the theories and ideas of Malcolm X as they found him to be a perfect role model for their appeal and cause. They believed in his dignity to stand up for what he believed in making him an outstanding person to be associated with.
